Is this sandwich meat actually safe, healthy?

Great Value Oven Roasted Turkey Breast, 16 oz https://www.walmart.com/ip/298155981

I’ve checked the ingredients online and offline

Ingredients

Turkey Breast, Turkey Broth, Contains less than 2% Salt, Sugar, Vinegar, Sodium Phosphate

No cherry juice, no celery powder, no BHT…

seems too good to be true? Where is the hidden danger here if only eating 1/3 the serving size daily? (a single slice)

Answer

Yes it’s perfectly fine to eat it. If you have high blood pressure there might be an issue. If not then you can eat this every day. It’s not cured nitrates or nitrates and it seems they are simply cooking it in a salt and sugar brine and using the sodium phosphate as a perservative.

Answer

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems that 3 types are salts are present:

  1. Sodium from the Turkey and Turkey broth itself (not typically listed compared to other meat products)
  2. Salt
  3. Sodium phosphate

Depending on how often one consumes this in addition to similar products, it may not be ideal for good health long term.

I hope this helps.

Answer

If this helps, I’ve learned when it comes to meat products, the health condition of the animal prior to slaughter, the diet of the animal, and living conditions can play a role in what the consumer receives or consumes.

These are parameters that are not always clarified on food labels, depending on the brand.

Answer

Of course it’s safe, it wouldn’t be on the shelves if it wasn’t.

It’s about as healthy as the sum of all it’s ingredients, if those ingredients are healthy for your situation and goals then yes, it’s healthy.

Answer

I wouldn’t call any processed meat nutritious or healthy at all. Plenty of literature out there about the dangers of consuming these type of meats. If you’re in a pinch with no other options, it would be ok…a little here and there every once in a blue moon won’t kill you. But everyday consumption is not something I would consider “good nutrition practices”…

Answer

Processed meats are considered carcinogenic by the WHO.

What is a processed meat?

>Processed meat – meat that has been transformed through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other processes to enhance flavor or improve preservation

Deli meats are considered a processed meat.

Does that package of deli meat have nutritional value? It has 11g of proteinper 2oz serving and has low or no saturated fats. It does have 25% the Daily Value of sodium at 590 milligrams per 2 oz serving. Sodium is not bad, but too much can be so maybe don’t have 6 servings of this turkey in a day. :)

If that is a source of protein that is within your budget and you will eat instead of, say, bologna or vienna sausages, then I think this is a good choice for you right now. If you are considering this product because you love sandwiches, are you able to purchase cuts of meat and make sandwiches out of those instead?

I don’t want to scare you away from a product that might be replacing a less healthy product in your life, and I also want to say that is perfectly acceptable to enjoy less-than-healthy foods from time to time! No one claims ice-cream is a nutritious or healthy food but no one says you should never ever have dessert!

I hope this helps. I have a degree in nutrition but I am not a register dietitian so if you want specific dietary advice, you might consider seeing one.

If you are pregnant, please consider a different food option due listeria concerns
