On a water fast and electrolytes seem to give me diarrhea. Am I doing it wrong? This normal?

I started a water fast a week ago ago and I didn’t know I’m supposed to also take electrolytes supplements, but luckily I read the wiki on this subreddit and realized I need sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Great. I ordered some pills for that on Amazon but it was gonna take two days to ship so in the mean time I figured I’d just add the right amount of table salt to water and I happened to have magnesium pills for headaches.

Tried it once and the next morning I had diarrhea so bad I almost didn’t make it to the bathroom after I woke up. I thought I’d just wait another day for the pills to see if that was any better. So I went a full 24 hours without any sodium and I was fine.

Then last night the pills arrived so I took one with lots of water. Sure enough, this morning diarrhea again.

Am I doing it wrong somehow? Or is this just a coincidence? Anyone else experience this?

Answer

okay so the pills are a bust. I literally just threw up like 2 min after having two pills with a lot of water. I hear good things about that snake juice powder so I guess I’m gonna try that next. any advice is welcome.

Answer

I think it’s hit and miss with the pills as some may have their different electrolyte levels off. I also find that even just doing pink salt my body has to get used to doing this every so often so when I start fasting again I always get the sh*ts but it goes away after a fast or two.
