Does alcohol inhibit muscle protein synthesis?

I read this somewhere. Is it true?

What other things mess with MPS? I also read cold baths?

Thanks folks.

Answer

Yes, alcohol does impact muscle protein synthesis:

> We provide novel data demonstrating that alcohol consumption reduces rates of MPS following a bout of concurrent exercise, even when co-ingested with protein. We conclude that alcohol ingestion suppresses the anabolic response in skeletal muscle and may therefore impair recovery and adaptation to training and/or subsequent performance.

Tangentially, there is no safe amount of alcohol: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(18)31310-2/fulltext

And yes, long term exposure of cold water immersion can negatively impact the rate of muscle growth.

Such a weird anecdote video alongside the Jeff Nippard video posted here(which you should watch). But this video from the Townsends talk about Benjamin Franklin, and his early days of working in the Printing Press. He specifically mentioned how his co workers were noticably stronger and larger individuals compared to only water drinkers and they attribute their strength to how much beer they drank.

In reality though, its all about calorie surplus to gain strength. So these individuals were probably getting enough protein throughout the day but supplementing it with beer for the calorie surplus, becoming “Fat Strong”. So I would say it doesn’t mess with protein synthesis as long as you keep yourself hydrated and don’t do it too often.

TLDR you can drink once a week with your friends and it will not affect your muscle synthesis.

Answer

I don’t think so, otherwise why inventing the drunken fighting style? Anyway I don’t think there is a direct correlation, any kind of poison will indeed damage your body, becouse everything is linked. If you are too drunk to do exercises then you loose muscles for examples. So it surely damage your brain and liver first… Not the muscles. The main thing that slow muscles regeneration is meat, differently from what commercials divulgate. I mean certain drugs probably do much worst.
