fasting and breastfeeding

Since I began breastfeeding almost 12 weeks ago I am constantly hungry. Going back to a low carb lifestyle has helped some with that, but has not helped enough. I am getting a good bit of water, but I would like to try an extended fast 48 hours.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any experience with ppd and fasting? Did it lower your supply. I have a preemie and need my supply to go up definitely not down.

Ooof! At 12 weeks don’t mess with your supply.

I’m at 10 months postpartum and have just now felt alright doing 16/8s. Fasting is about lowering insulin during periods of restriction. Pregnancy and nursing is a period of growth.

Your baby is using your milk (filtered blood! Metal AF) to determine what kind of environment they’ve been born into. You want them to get the message that there’s plenty of food and not to worry about it. Even if your supply can handle it you don’t want them to get the hormonal message that there’s a lack of resources. This period of growth and expansion in your life is so small, try your best to cherish it and good luck!

I found oat milk smoothies with peanut butter, dark chocolate, oats and banana helped maintain my supply while pumping for my preemie in hospital, super satisfying and filling, plus oats and nuts are supposedly said to increase supply.

I wish you the best of luck on your BF journey!

Answer

Don’t fast- your body is burning 500 extra + calories. You need to eat - and you can very healthy choices, but please don’t fast - esp 12 weeks postpartum. Even if you weren’t breastfeeding I wouldn’t recommend fasting 12 weeks postpartum - your body just went through a lot.
