Fasting and Gilbert's syndrome

I have Gilbert’s syndrome which basically means that bilirubin levels are high in my body. It’s pretty common and generally asymptomatic. One symptom is getting jaundice from time to time if you’re stressed out or if you’re…fasting.

I actually didn’t connect the dots for a while, as I have been 16:8 fasting for a year, but now I looked at my eyelids and they are a bit yellow. So i suddenly remembered that the way Gilbert’s is diagnosed is after 3 days of fasting, they check the bilirubin levels and are higher than usual.

So I’m wondering whether my IF habits are causing this and honestly, if I should stop IF altogether. Will ask a doctor after the holidays, in the meantime could use some info, has any of you had any experience about it? I practice IF mostly for weight maintenance, but if I break it I will immediately gain weight. If it’s health concerning I’ll stop, but I’m not sure.

Answer

Hmm. My brother has Gilbert’s and while he doesn’t adhere to IF, he hasn’t ever really been a breakfast eater and has naturally fasted a lot without intention. He has only ever noticed his symptoms when he is triggered by other stress or illness, but I don’t think it’s consistent with fasting. I wonder if your body is missing something else, nutrient wise? I hope you get some clarity from your doctor!
