Fasting reduces monocytes, new study says

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/skipping-breakfast-fasting-compromised-immune-system

I don’t know how it works but I do wonder if it’s the stress of not being fed that lowers the test animals immune response. I mean, cortisol and adrenaline do wreak havoc in the body and what’s more stressful than starvation? We people are different, we fast because we want to and it almost soothes us,not stress us. Perhaps our bodies behave differently in this case?what do you think?

Answer

Fasting strengthens immune system but not during fasting.

First, immune cells die, then after refeeding they are replaced by brand new ones.

Now, just by skipping breakfast? Sounds iffy but further research is needed.

And even if fasting did slightly weaken immune system, guess what else does?

Obesity

Insulin resistance

Chronic Inflammation

Processed foods

Etc

Fasting IMO is likely still a huge net positive if it ameliorates these conditions.

Answer

Less monocytes are without question associated with good health.

Macrophages are monocytes that clean up garbage. Less monocytes means you have less garbage to clean up.

Of course when you eat, there is garbage to clean up and the body knows to elevate monocytes.
