I picked up this pre-made General Tso’s tofu at a local grocery store: https://imgur.com/FX65XvV
It claims to have 52 grams of protein in 212g total, which initially blew me away. But after some research, the highest-protein tofu I can find has 14g per 91g total, which would be \~33g for 212g total.
Is there any way the numbers on that package could be legit or is it definitely a lie?
Sounds about right to me. This looks like a cooked/prepared product, so the difference is probably just water weight (if you fry or press tofu, it expels excess water so what’s left contains more fat/protein/carbs per gram of weight).
The calories don’t add up.
They claim 52g of protein, which would be roughly 208 calories.
They claim 6g of fat, which they correctly list as 54 calories.
And they claim 23g of carbs, which would be roughly 92 calories.
This would total about 354 calories, but they claim 255 calories.
They also claim that the protein content is 64% of the daily value. Given that most tofu makers haven’t adopted PDCAAS, we can impute that the amount of protein based on this percentage is actually 32g. That would reduce the protein calories by 88, which would make the total calories about 274, which is at least closer to 255.
I would recommend contacting the manufacturer, because this seems like an error.
