Sunflowers seed and oils are an excellent source of Omega6 essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential because your body doesn’t make these fatty acids itself, so you need these fatty acids from external sources (diet).

Sunflower products receive a bad reputation because of the Omega6 content. Although Omega6 fatty acids are essential, in western populations many food products are cooked, packaged, and/or processed with oil that contain these fatty acids.

Soybean Oil for instance is very cheap and pumped into many frozen foods, fast foods, prepackaged foods, canned foods, chips, sauces etc. Soybean oil is a rich source of Omega6 fatty acids. I was once given a packet of brown sugar from a very ubiquitous fast food restaurant and noticed there was an ingredients label on it. Even the sugar contained soybean oils, which this restaurant used to sugar the cinnamon rolls, ice cream, pies, etc. If you don’t see where I am going with this, consider that in a perfect world, your fats want to be balanced anywhere between 1:1 Omega6:Omega3, and ideally 1:4 4:1. For every 4spoons of Omega6, one spoon of omega3. Western diets lean absurdly 14:1 ~ 20:1. It may not be in most people’s favor in the west, to get any more Omega6 than they already do if their diet is composed significantly of processed, manufactured, pre-made, with these fats.

It’s just easy and cheap access in the west. Omega6 fatty acids, especially from sunflower seeds defiantly have their place in a healthy diet and lifestyle.

As with all things, it depends. How is that particular brand processed? Does it have any additives? Is it pure sunflower oil or is it a mixture of other oils?

Seed oils are generally not as healthy as other choices.
