Losing weight by mostly eating veggies.

So I am in first week of fasting 20/4 and Ive lost 5 lbs already. I am consuming one meal a day which consist of a protein and rice and beans. I also have two hearty green smoothies with lots of veggies and leafy greens. Thats all I eat. I logged my diet into myfitnesspal and I saw I wasn’t consuming alot of protein (I barely consume 25% of daily iron). Will this be a problem? I don’t mind losing some muscle in the weight loss process but I don’t wanna be malnourished since I am mostly eating plants.

Answer

While some loss of lean body mass is usually inevitable, I wouldn’t be so quick to write off muscle in exchange for weight loss.

Muscle tissue uses a fair number of calories even when not being used in relation to other cells, it’s something like six times the amount of fat tissue. It’s not hundreds of calories extra a day or anything, but it really adds up over time.

Losing the muscle you have is just losing extra metabolism and means you need to deficit more. So it’s only going to be easier in the long run to shift some more calories into protein to maintain or at least minimize losses.
