Probiotics & Prebiotics on an extended fast.

Probiotics are good gut bacteria and Prebiotics are basically the fiber they eat. Obviously during fasting your gut biome isn’t getting the food they need either.

So I’m trying to find some science on just how the gut biome is affected during extended fasting.

I’m planning on taking a prebiotic capsule and a tablespoon of psyllium husk each morning for the care and feeding of my gut biome.

Started a small 4+ day fast this afternoon, just curious about how adding a morning dose of fiber and probiotics will affect it.

In my opinion I would rather don’t mind with my guts bacteria during the fast as most of them will die but I’ll make sure to restart the engine at the end of the fast.During your fast there is no need of the bacteria as there is nothing to digest and you might be likely to provoke unwanted change in your ecosystem.

Answer

I have never worried about gut bacteria unless I was also taking anti-biotics at the same time. I’ve been fasting for 15 years and never noticed a difference in how my stomach acts when fasting. Even after long fasts.

What you SHOULD be worried about, is eating something that’s not prepared properly after a fast. Those gut bacteria are usually in high enough amounts that they can overwhelm bad bacteria pretty easily. They dont get a chance to gain a foothold. But after a longer fast, you simply have less in your stomach and it’s much easier to get sick from it.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if many people are experiencing stomach distress after a fast because of this. Not because of what they ate.
