Sweet taste when in deep ketosis

I have been on keto for 5 months. Very strict and lost 25% of my body weight. I have been doing some 18:6, 20:4 and OMAD.

What I have noticed is that when I am really deep in ketosis, like if I have been doing OMAD for a few days, I get a sweet taste in my mouth.

It is not all the time. I have read descriptions about diabetes and it is not the same. Rather than being a constant thing, it’s more like when I have kept my mouth still for an hour while I am working. Then when I move my mouthb and swallow, as if I am going to talk to someone, I get a faint rush of sweetness. It is as if I had some sweetener stuck in a tooth.

When it started happening I thought it was something to do with switching to sweetener, or chewing sugar free gum. But it still happens even when I have not had sweetener for days and my mouth is clean after only drinking water.

I do not have any keto equipment and do not really intend to buy anything. I have a blood glucose meter. Should I check my glucose when I notice this happening?

Answer

I’ve done a lot of fasting and never encountered this problem. My first thought was the whole diabetes thing, but you’ve already ruled that out. Wouldn’t hurt to test your blood glucose when it happens, as more data is always useful.
