32g of protein being 30% of the daily value?

I recently picked up some protein shakes, which use pea protein, and when i checked the nutrition label, it says there is 32 grams of protein, but it’s only counting for 30% of the daily value? Why does it say this? I thought the daily value was 50 grams, in which case this would be 64% not 30?

Answer

Most of the daily recommended doses are wild guesstimations at best. Daily protein intake depends wildly on your goals and weight.

50g protein is, overall, a VERY low number. Like, if you have any real fitness related goals good odds you should nearly double it at least.

Answer

Anyone that cares enough about their health to supplement protein likely needs much more than 50 grams. Ie. anyone doing any amount of resistance training whatsoever. You may be an outlier because it looks like you have a vegan source of protein? So you may be a vegan who does no exercise? Even then protein requirements vary widely by activity level and age. Protein requirements go way up with age.

Answer

Protein math may surprise you.

‘The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is a modest 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.’

https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/how-much-protein-do-you-need-every-day-201506188096

0.8 g / kg / day

0.36 g / lb / day

Example 70 pound person: (see edit)

70 lb * 0.36 g / lb / day = 25.2 g / day

25.2 g / per day * oz / 28.35 g = 0.88 oz / day

Answer

Most people are not going to metabolize more than 30g of protein in a single dose. My max/day during my highest weight gain period was 150g over 5 meals. I gained 36lb in 100days of training and now believe I shed much of that protein rather than metabolizing it.
