Are these soya chunks legit for building muscle or is there a catch?

So I remember my mum making these and they were tasty AF. I found them in the Indian aisle for AUD $2.5 ($1.72 USD) for 400 grams

Am I missing something or have I found the CHEAPEST source of protein money can buy? Just on a crazy budget so trying to save where I can.

Personally I don’t like tofu and tofu like products but soy is a very cheap good source of protein.

And before anyone throws out the phyto“estrogen” found in soy. All studies show no estrogenic effects with normal soy consumption.

Answer

soya chunks and soy granules are also called tvp or tsp (textured vegetable/soy protein). they are basically defatted soybeans and by far the cheapest source of protein in my area (some beans and lentils come close). they are great. i usually “cut” mince meat with soy granules. so if i am making mince chicken or mince mutton curry, i will use 20% mince meat and the rest cooked and drained soy granules. you still get the meaty taste, tons of protein, some extra fiber, and save on money.

if you don’t eat meat, they are also great on their own as long as you add sufficient spices and seasonings.

Answer

Protein doesn’t always = protein, as in the bioavailability and amino acid profile of soy is not gonna be the same as say meat or eggs or dairy etc. Honestly unless your a pro bodybuilder and not using as your primary protein source I think it’s perfectly fine.
