Does decaf tea reduce iron absorption as much as normal tea?

I have heard that drinking tea reduces the amount of iron you absorb from your food. I was wondering if decaf tea does the same.

Answer

Yes it does still have the same effect. Because Green Tea, Black Tea, and some herbal teas contain polyphenols such as Tannins that reduce the absorption of non-heme Iron (plant based Iron) meaning that heme-Iron absorption is not affected. There are some studies that show that if you combine your tea with lemon juice it will neglect the effect of tannins and help absorb the Iron due it’s citric and Vitamin C content. The good rule of thumb is not to consume your tea close to your meals, because it will not make you anemic. It just reduces the absorption of non-heme iron.
