Does Intermittent Fasting affect your cycle?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to intermittent fasting as a regular lifestyle, but I have successfully done some fasts previously. I’ve been getting back into my exercise routine and combining this with intermittent fasting, but I’ve noticed my period is taking longer to come than usual. There’s absolutely no chance that I’m pregnant, and this is unusual for me. I’m wondering if this is caused by my recent diet change, and if it’s something that my body is just getting used to?

If there’s anyone who has more experience in intermittent fasting than me, I’d like to know if this is something you ever experienced? Or maybe you’ve heard of this happening before? If so will my cycle return to normal later on?

Thanks :) I appreciate your responses and insight

Answer

It’s likely just a temporary reaction to the mild physical stress of starting IF. It likely will go back to normal once your body adjusts.

I actually had the opposite experience. I never had regular periods in my life (PCOS), but I’ve been doing IF since last May and stopped the pill in January, and I’m actually having regular periods now. That is probably a PCOS-specific effect though. PCOS is known to be linked to insulin resistance, which IF can help with.
