Does Thirst Eventually Go Away?

I’m about to enter Day 9 on a long, hard dry fast. My record so far has been 10 days total.

I was curious about those who have done beyond 10 days, maybe up to 15 days or so - did your thirst for water eventually go away? Thank you!

Answer

No it doesn’t, and it is not supposed to. If anything, it will only be increasing.

Hunger goes away, because your body can switch to autophagy mode, where you don’t need external sources of food for a while (until you burn all your “supplies”).

But water is a more critical and limited ressource. Your body doesn’t store that much additional water, besides the amount it needs to function properly.

It can synthesize some by oxidizing fat tissues (that’s why you keep pissing even though you’re not drinking) but its ability to do so only decreases with time.

There is no such thing as a “waterless mode” that your body will switch to, thus relieving you from thirst. Thirst may be lower in the morning (when your body has made some water during the night) but it’s only a temporary relief that won’t solve the overall depletion of water in your body.

There may be day to day variations depending on your mood, activity, and other factors, making a day “easier” than the previous one. But the general trend will still be towards increasing thirst.

And that’s a good thing, because this urge to drink is what prevents you from pushing it too far and, you know… dying and whatnot.

Answer

The way that I am dealing with thirst is chewing bubble gum. It is the same piece, over and over, so the sugar is long gone, but it gets the saliva pumping a bit. When my jaw gets tired, I just put the gum back in the little jar I keep it in.
