Does Type of Water Matter During an Extended Water Fast?

Just started my first water fast. Going for 7 days and I’m going on 22 hours fasted.

Started wondering if there was an optimal water to drink (spring, tap, sparkling, warm, cold, hot, alkaline, purified etc.) during a water fast? Tried to look on the sub and online and couldn’t find anything that specifically answered my question.

I have alkaline water but not sure about going 7 days of only alkaline water.

Answer

You should never attempt a long fast on just water. You need electrolytes, or else there is a sure chance the fast will be unpleasant and detrimental to your health. Think muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, sleep issues, and such.

A short answer to your question is that no it does not matter unless you are worried about your teeth health. Honestly, the most important thing is not getting bored.

For the long answer, I implore you to think about why what type of water would matter.

Spring water has important minerals in it, although often very little to the point of negligible. So it essentially isn’t different to distilled.

Tap water (assuming you live somewhere where that is safe to drink) is most noted for added fluoride, which is good for your teeth. If that’s something you’re worried about then drink tap water.

Sparkling as far as I’m aware is quite acidic, which is bad for your teeth. If you’re worried about that then don’t drink it.

Very cold water requires your body to heat it up before using it, burning a very small amount of calories.

Warm/hot water does a good job of calming your stomach if you’re nauseous and warming you up. I rely very heavily on hot water once a few days in.

Purified water has nothing in it other than H2O, so it’s just the default option.

I will also say that currently no research supports the idea that alkaline water does anything except balancing stomach acidity. Current research considers it impossible to change blood or body acidity through food or water.
