Fasting after having had surgery?

I’m not planning on fasting atm. Just had surgery, but I’m a regular faster/IM Faster in general. Sitting around healing, I got to wondering what people know about fasting while on the mend from a surgery.

For the record, mine wasn’t very invasive. A bit of a large cut, but that’s the worst of it.

I have always been told to eat lots of protein post surgery. I had a fairly invasive surgery and I did this. I need to have a similar surgery. I dug around and found a couple of anecdotal accounts from people who fasted before and after and they said it really helped with inflammation and it significantly cut down their recovery time. My recovery was pretty brutal last time so I’m open to trying something different next time. YMMV so speak to your doctor etc. and always listen to your body. I was pretty immobile and didn’t have much of an appetite but I forced myself to eat. Knowing what I know now I would have taken a different approach.

In the last 14 months I had several surgeries, each one with anaesthesia (like when you are completely gone, not just a local one). And I just did what I always do right after surgery. I wouldn’t eat until the afternoon. But I’m fasting for years at this point so I really had no appetite/ hunger/ urge to eat the whole day so I stuck to my regular eating habits.

I think it is important to listen to your body. If you think you need to eat, then go ahead. If you feel good without eating for a while, then don’t. This is probably a really individual thing.
