How Badly Does Metamucil Break Your Fast?

I’ve done intermittent fasting on and off over the years with good results. Recently I had a few episodes of diverticulitis so started taking Metamucil each morning in a glass of orange juice to increase my fibre. I’m borderline overweight but have gone back to fasting from dinner to lunch the following day. Other than a few black coffees in the morning, this glass of orange juice with a couple of teaspoons of Metamucil is all I have. My weight is just not shifting! Is the orange juice/Metamucil fucking up my fast? I guess I could drink it in the afternoon instead? I’ve even introduced a diet shake in place of lunch for the last two weeks and my weight just hovers at the same place every day. Thanks

Answer

I mean, it’s fasting = yes or fasting = no. If you eat something like orange juice which is super sugary and caloric, you’re not fasting.

Regarding weight loss, I say break your fast around lunch with your Metamucil and track your calories strictly for 2 days to see if that’s being measured incorrectly and where your weight loss is failing

Answer

In orange juice? Why not water?

Whatever the impacts of the Metamucil, they pale in comparison to the orange juice. Also why would you ruin delicious orange juice with Metamucil? If you’re going to pack that much sugar into a glass and drink it, you might as just enjoy it.

I recommend you drink your Metamucil in water and just enjoy your OJ if you’re going to chow down on all those blood-sugar spiking liquid-calories.

As a secondary piece of advice, drink your Metamucil before or after your fast. Is there any reason to drink it when it will break your fast rather than drinking it during your eating window?

Answer

You can get stevia-sweetened, sugar free, orange- flavoured metamucil.

I mix that with an MCT powder and water. ( I have a medication that I can’t take on an empty stomach). Its not necessarily fasting, but it at least keeps me in a ketogenic state. I skip breakfast and do this later on.

Answer

Sugar of OJ , First thing? Definitely isn’t helping. And the loaded fiber of Metamucil prob isn’t helping the ‘fast’ per se.

But if you’re exercising and toning- the weight might not shift as fast as the inches around your waist.
