How do you do a 12:12 fast properly?

I’m not sure if I’m doing this right but I eat at 7 am, fast for 10 hours (cause I get too hungry), eat at 5 pm, and sleep then repeat.

Am I supposed to eat at 7 am, fast for 12 hours, dinner at 7 pm, then fast again? Or can I eat lunch in between cause I get too hungry?

Answer

12:12 would be that you have a twelve-hour window within which you eat. So if your first meal is at seven AM, you’d be done by seven PM. You don’t have to additionally refrain from eating during the eating window: lunch would be fine.

Everything depends on your goals. If you’re doing this kind of fast to limit snacking, then eat your regular meals but don’t snack between meals, or after 7 PM. That’s totally legit. If you’re doing it for diabetes control, weight loss, or other reasons, you’re really going to want to fast for a lot longer than 12 hours, and probably drop to two meals, or even one meal, a day. Most people who do intermittent fasting don’t eat for a minimum of 16 hours a day, with some as high as 23 hours. Narrowing the eating window means you typically eat less food and you don’t have the carb/insulin spike cycle.

You might try a free app like Fastic as it has articles/courses that explain a lot. I started July 3 and started with 14:10 - I’m now up to 17:7. I eased in. I found that if I don’t eat after dinner and start the clock, I can easily do 14 -16 hours of fasting.

Good luck.
