In general, is it okay to cook with extra virgin olive oil daily?

I love fried food, particularly hashbrowns and eggs. Ignoring the personal context of hashbrowns and eggs, is it okay to cook with extra virgin olive oil daily?

Just about everyday theres something i want to fry up and eat, but its to the point that im starting to be concerned about the quantity of oil im eating.

How unhealthy is it to cook with oil everyday? Does the high quantity of monounsaturated fat make it okay to cook with extra virgin oils?

Answer

So I’m fat, but been losing weight recently (dropped 20 pounds in 2 months). I cook with oil for every meal. The main thing is to just make sure that when you cook you use less oil.

A little bit of oil in a good nonstick goes a long way. I also use olive oil (not super sure about the virginity of it though).

Answer

Olive oil is perfectly fine to cook with daily. It’s one of the most researched oils and has fantastic experimental results. If you were going to cook daily with oil, arguably olive oil is one of the best choices.

Answer

I’d get a cheaper oil for cooking. Nothing to do with nutrition but extra Virgin usually more expensive and is better used for dressings. Quite a low smoke point on extra Virgin as well which can cause food to burn quicker and you lose the flavour of it.

Answer

Cooking with oil is not a problem… But olive oil is less ideal for high heat and far better for salads and such, whereas things like coconut oil, avocado oil or animal fats like tallow or ghee are more tolerant to high heat. It has to do with heat resistance and smoke point, and it probably depends on the type of cooking, but thats the general stance.

Answer

MUFAs are still prone to oxidation, and heat will cause more of it. Is it something to worry about? IDK. In terms of health, not cooking with oil is probably better, but if you have to, olive oil should probably be your choice. Make sure your olive oil is actually 100% EVOO. Your best bet is to look for award winning brands.

Answer

It’s been stated here that olive oil should be used for cold things such as salads, etc. It has a very low smoke point and will go rancid if heated too much.

Ghee is great for veggies and eggs. Animal fat is great for meats/potatoes. I baste my eggs in ghee, don’t even need to use too much like most recipes I find online. Duck fat hash browns sound so delicious.

Whatever/however you’re cooking, you should not have actual smoke coming from the pan.
