Every article I’ve come across addresses the extreme ratios involved and a recommendation of a ratio of Omega 6 : Omega 3 as close to 1:1 or at least below 4:1.
However the FDA also says the RDI for Omega 6 is 17g where as the RDI for Omega 3 is 1.6.
To achieve a 1:1 Ratio while meeting the Omega 6 RDI requires 12x the RDI of Omega-3, or at least 4.25g for 4:1 Ratios.
Going the other way by reducing Omega 6 to reach a 4:1 Ratio, means reducing consumption to 6.4g, or 12g if we are pushing the upper limit of Omega 3 to be 3.0.
RDI is a crappy metric.
Basically it means the minimum required to not get sick or die.
I would honestly throw in the garbage. Especially if trying to cultivate your own health.
It is not the maximum your body can use and utilize, but what is needed at least to have some kind of health (in most of the people. You think the ‘RDI’ is the same for a 100 pound girl and a 200 pound guy? Well according to the FDA it is.
It is quite apparent with the fats also. The RDI for vitamin D is so miniscule, most research suggests much larger amounts needed to get desired results.
https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/no-need-to-avoid-healthy-omega-6-fats - I think the ratio thing is just one of those myths that’s persisted that at one point was kinda true and now has been proven not so much
Well yes and no.
It’s mostly about having the highest possible amount of o-3 while having the lowest o-6 possible. It’s hard to get a 1:4 and pretty much impossible for mortals to go better than that.
If i remember right the ratio is generally bs and stems from same source that people caught up and spead quicker than it was scientifically appoved. I mean it’s a decent indication but nothing solid and should not be persued. Instead it’s all about 2nd paragraph \^
No organization recommends a 1:1 or 4:1 ratio ,though 5:1 ratio is recommended in japanese rda, most organization considers 1:10 ratio as being good with more emphasis on the quantity than ratio .
La does affect conversion of ala to epa+dha at high levels (like 50:1 ratio ) reducing its conversion efficiency by half.
