Taking multivitamin, concerned about the Vitamin A content

Hi!

The vitamin I’m taking has 800UG of Vitamin A included, and after a quick Google that seems like too much daily? I don’t rant to develop osteoporosis!

Thanks

Answer

800 mcg is right about 100% DV.

Also, if it’s Beta-Carotene, then it’s not something you need to worry about. Beta-Carotene is a precursor for Vit A that’s found in plants, it’s not something that can cause Vit A poisoning. Your body will just stop converting it to Vit A if it doesn’t need it.

If it’s Retinol, which is just straight Vit A, then you should keep an eye on your intake. Retinol is the Vit A found in animal products, most notably Livers and is why you shouldn’t eat Liver more than once or twice per week.

Answer

Not massively. NHS recommends 700µg a day for men and 600µm for women and with a multivitamin it won’t be 100% absorbed. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vitamins-and-minerals/vitamin-a/

Although it does say you should be able to get it easily from food and

>Some research suggests that having more than an average of 1.5 mg (1,500 µg) a day of vitamin A over many years may affect your bones

so it’s not too much by itself, but be careful you aren’t getting too much from your diet too.
