Thoughts on nutritional yeast?

I know all the supposed good parts, but recently I found an article boasting statements such as…

“Sure, it’s packed with vitamin B12, and it’s an ingredient in every vegan “cheese” sauce from here to Timbuktu. However, those yellow flakes that look remarkably like fish food contribute to food cravings, energy lags, and not-so-good fungal changes in your gut biome.

If you feel great when you eat nutritional yeast, more power to you — but if you’re thinking of adding this so-called “superfood” to your diet, then I strongly suggest that you pay close attention to the way it makes you feel. Why? Yeasts almost always contain high levels of toxins that hamper your performance and keep you from feeling your best.”

What is your opinion?

p.s.- Bonus points if you add in your thoughts on if soy is unhealthy due to causing possible hormone imbalances / how it’s usually grown & harvested.

I sprinkle a little bit, like salt or pepper, on a plate of food where it will mix with all the other nutrients…besides, beer has yeast in it and I haven’t heard anyone concerned with unhealthy gut biomes over that food product because of it!

Nutritional yeast is absolutely fine in normal amounts, and a good source of a bunch of nutrients, plus it’s a nice alternative to dairy for a cheesy flavour of you like it.

As with any food, if you haven’t had it ever, don’t start with huge amounts, as your system may get a little upset (typically upset stomach of bloating), but you can easily acclimate.

There is no connection with dietary yeast and yeast overgrowth, that’s pure bs.

And soy is an incredible health food. Probably overstated a bit, but generally it’s a great source of protein that also has fibre and calcium (or magnesium depending how it was set of it’s tofu). Plus phytoestrogens which may/likely help with perimenopause/menopause, as well as prostate health, among other things. Yes, soy is one of the top allergens, but it’s orders of magnitude less common than nuts and other ones. Most people are not allergic.

You’re usually only using about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of nutritional yeast at a time so you’re not going to consume enough calories from it from it for it to be the cause of any of those things even if that is true, and this article seems pretty vague.

Which toxins? What effect are they having on the body and is it bad enough to overshadow the health benefits? At what dose do they become toxins? Everything is a toxin in the right dose and inversely most things are fine below that dose.

I do notice that it can sometimes give me uncomfortable bloating, but only mildly and only sometimes. Other people may experience more painful bloating after consuming it.

As for soy, every study I’ve seen seems to indicate that you’d need to consume multiple blocks of tofu a day washed down with soy milk with some soybeans as snacks between meals to get a mild endocrine disrupting effect at the end of it.

You’ll be sick from severe bloating/gas, other nutritional deficiencies, and lack of fat in your diet long before you hurt yourself that way.
