Thoughts on these criticisms of oatmeal?

Found this video when looking at overnight oats recipes. His criticisms are the lack of satiety, increase in blood sugar/insulin, and nutrients are not absorbed by the body

The sources he cites are in the video description

Answer

His sources, all three of which, are aimed at people with Celiac Disease, which is an autoimmune condition in which peoples bodies trigger inflammatory chaos in response to the presence of gluten, which is a protein found in cereal grains (wheat, barley, etc).

The relevance of any of these studies, or their findings / conclusions, have almost nothing to do with people without Celiac Disease.

The guy in the video is making scientifically unfounded claims based on either a misguided understanding, or by deliberate misrepresentation in order to gain popularity.

Ignore it.

Well first off, he starts the video off with a strawman, and basically tries to mock this idea that everyone says that oatmeal is the “king of foods,” and he basically “everyone thinks oats are sooo great, but they’re secretly bad

Except… I don’t know who is saying that. Who is going around claiming that oatmeal is the best food ever? I haven’t heard anyone say this. What I do hear people say is, that they like oatmeal, or that it’s a preferred breakfast food. but this guy is trying to paint this conspiracy theory that everyone is eating oatmeal like it’s manna from Heaven, and we’re all wrong for doing so.

Another thing: he makes fun of the idea that people eating breakfast as the most important meal or the day as being stupid or uninformed. It’s seems that the intended response is for you to go “wait, am I not supposed to eat breakfast?” when there is literally nothing wrong with eating breakfast.

So right off the bat, before he even gets into his points… he’s just waving red flags

Then he goes on to talk about how it jacks up your blood sugar. Newsflash, the act of eating food raises your blood sugar. If you had a disorder where your body didn’t handle insulin well, such as insulin resistance, or diabetes, then that would be a concern - but if you’re just an average Joe, this is not something you should be worried about.

And if you really are concerned about that, there are things you can pair with oatmeal, basically a source of protein and a fat

To the point about it causes gut inflammation… you gotta look out for people who use terms like “inflammation.” Inflammation means something is inflamed. Do you experience discomfort after eating oatmeal? If you don’t, then you’re probably not inflamed.

As far as it not being very satiating, I agree with this in the sense that, if I eat oatmeal and nothing else, I’ll be hungry again an hour later. That’s why, again, you paid it with a protein and a fat. I like to make “proats” which I use a method that cooks egg whites into the oat meal, usually 2-3 egg whites. Then I’ll add banana slices, chia, maybe some peanut butter. As long as you balance it out it will be more satiating

But then he goes off into another fallacious scenario where everyone eats oatmeal, then gets hungry an hour later, and then they eat an oatmeal bar, and then eat more oatmeal, and more oatmeal, and more oatmeal, and more oatmeal - he’s basically saying that we just fall down this big rabbit hole, this downward spiral of eating oats, and the constant insulin spikes cause problems. Oh no, that insulin again!

I mean he acts like we’re just eating oats all day, like a bunch of addicts.

First of all - that’s ridiculous, no one is eating oats all day. Most of us didn’t forget that, like… cheese exists, and sandwiches exist, and chicken, and whatnot. Not sure about you, but I’m not just eating oats. And second of all - the insulin thing, man. Are you diabetic? If the answer is no, then you don’t need to worry about that.

I just want to end this with one more point: oats are a cheap, shelf stable food item. You’ll notice, as you watch these fitness “gurus” on the internet, that there is a theme with these people where they demonize cheap, shelf stable foods. Are they trying to get you to buy more expensive items, by saying the cheap ones are bad? You need to ask these questions when you see someone making content like this. Those foods may actually be someone’s only source of this/that nutrient. We don’t all have YouTube money to go out and buy the expensive alternatives. So keep that in mind - this guy is probably not in any position to lecture anyone about how to eat, or what groceries to buy
