Too much coffee? Throat acid burn?

Fasting hour 62 of 120. This morning I felt like I was getting a sore throat and I did notice that the black coffee I was drinking was irritating me. Could the acid have caused the irritation? I only drink like 2 cups a day. I don’t think I’m sick, I took a covid test and my energy level is ok. I switched to iced green tea and my throat is still annoying.

Answer

I get the worst heartburn during fasts sometimes.

I sip water and if it gets intolerable I’ll pop half of a tums chewable. Breaks the fast but it’s not the most common issue for me and doesn’t happen for my regular IF schedule. If you’ve just begun you may notice it reduce with practice. Your stomach is likely still expecting food and creating the acid for it. Eventually it learns to wait for actual food again like it always shoulda.

Answer

Sounds like heartburn. It can happen with fasts. So it’s not the coffee burning, it’s the coffee going into your empty gut and then the stomach acid burning.

Sipping just hot water can help, or mint tea (just mint, not black/green/white tea with mint). Sleep in an elevated position. It may pass, or continue on and off.
