How much will my morning cup of coffee affect my fast?

Exactly what it says in the title. I start work very early and find a cup of strong coffee (milk no sugar) gives me a much needed energy burst. Currently on the 16:8 plan so I obviously shouldn’t be having anything besides water but I’m just wondering how much damage that cup of coffee does?

Answer

You do you. I personally take half and half in my coffee during my “fast” because otherwise I would be miserable and give up the whole thing.

There are conflicting studies on whether the actual fast has health benefits.

For me, it’s the discipline of not eating snacks all night that is giving me progress.

Answer

It depends on your metabolic health. The milk will cause a, probably undetectable, rise in blood glucose. Your pancreas will produce insulin to remove the glucose.

If you’re metabolically healthy the dose of insulin will be small. The insulin will go away and your blood glucose will be used up so you can resume burning fat.

If you’re not metabolically healthy your pancreas will produce a large dose of insulin and it will take hours for your body to remove excess glucose and insulin so that you can return to burning fat.

Either way, your fast is interrupted. You’re back to the anabolic stage of metabolism.

Answer

I tend to err on the side of caution with technical fast breaking, but black coffee I’ll consume without abandon. No creamer for me though, until my window.

Black coffee/plain tea/etc is said to be fine with fasting. Some will say a tiny bit of cream is also fine, you can go with that if you want, I personally don’t.
