what's the problem with drinking lemon water or broth on a fast?

everytime i look up whether it’s ok to drink lemon water or broth on a fast, I see times of comments being quite angry, saying no, fasting means you only drink water. I understand that concept, but I do wonder what difference it makes. sure, it may add up to 20 or 50 calories in a day, depending on how much you consume period but it makes it so much easier for me to actually stick to fasting. people always say it won’t kick you out of ketosis karma no will it stop you from losing a lot of weight, and I can’t imagine that such a little amount of lemon juice or a table spoon of broth will kick you out of autophagy. so I wonder what the disadvantage of this actually is, compared to an absolutely clean, water and electrolytes only, fast. same question goes for a few pieces of chewing gum, for example.

for reference, i am talking about extended (7-day or longer) fasts.

Answer

It just isn’t considered fasting, that’s all.

Lemon water is arguably fine as there is minimal/zero calories.

But the idea of a fast is the absence of food. If you introduce broth you are by definition no longer fasting. You’re just severely restricting your calories that day.

Some people argue that in order to reap all the benefits of an extended fast, you have to only stick to water and electrolytes (which I agree with).

However, it’s up to you to decide what’s easiest and what you can manage.

Answer

All you can do is test it yourself and see what works for you.

Would avoid gum because it will (as I butcher this) cause an insulin response (?), which will cause your hunger to worsen. Instead of day 3 hunger is normally gone - at least for me, everyone is different.

Not sure how many calories will knock you out of autophagy.
