Any success doing IF while breastfeeding?

IF helped me lose 50lbs prior to getting pregnant. I stopped during pregnancy on my OB’s orders. I’m breastfeeding now and wondering if anyone’s done IF while nursing? I don’t want to hurt my supply but would love to lose this baby weight. It’s also one less thing to worry about while taking care of my daughter during the day, I’d only have to handle dinner. Thanks!

Answer

I’ve breastfed and done IF separately and I honestly don’t think that I would or could do them concurrently. Breastfeeding requires you to consume a lot of calories and I think it would negatively affect your supply.

I EP’d for 18 months and honestly that was a great postpartum weight loss plan even with the extra calories to maintain my supply, I lost weight doing that alone without much exercise.

Of course speak with your doctor and a lactation consultant! Good luck!

Currently 16:8 or 18:6 and EBF a 4 month old. EBF utilizes about 500 calories per day - this does not mean that you need an extra 500 calories! Some calories will come from stored body fat. As long as you are focusing on nutrient dense foods and eating an appropriate amount, your supply should be fine. This isn’t the time for a 1200 calorie diet, but you don’t have eat calorie dense lactation cookies either. General recommendation I see is to usually not go over 20 hours of fasting while breastfeeding, and my personal experiences would support that. “Only have to handle dinner” sounds like OMAD, which I wouldn’t recommend. TMAD with high quality foods is what I do.
