Answer

The easiest way is to check your own body.

Lets say you have been on a bulk on 3000 cals. You could estimate your surplus calorie based on how much weight you’ve been gaining a week. I think 1kg (2 lbs) of bodyweight gained/week is the equivalent to 7000kcals of surplus (1000kcals/day). You could adjust to how much you were gaining per week to check the surplus you had per day.

I would then remove the surplus (to be on “maintenance” at 2000kcals in the example) for a week to check if that’s truly the maintenance, and from there remove 200-300 kcals/day. That way you can actually move up and down your calories quite easily. Lets say 1-2 months from now you get stuck. You can remove an extra 100kcals or add 100kcals of cardio exercises.

Answer

Are you losing weight at the rate you want? If so, I’d say you’re fine.

You could also try adding in more calories and sticking to it for a couple weeks and see if that slows your weight loss, or if it continues at the rate you want. More calories might help you build muscle a little easier.
