diarrhea after breaking fast

I broke a 43 hour fast with 1000 calories worth of granola, soy yogurt, fruit and oreos which I know was stupid. During my fast I didn’t take any electrolyte supplements or drink enough water. Now I have really bad diarrhea. Is it possible I could have gotten refeeding syndrome or is this normal?

Answer

It happens. Your digestive system can shut down and when it gets food for the first time it elicits a response of pushing everything through. One of my first fasts was 80 hours that I broke with a whole rotisserie chicken. Was not a good weekend.

Answer

  1. Refeeding syndrome usually manifests in weakness, heart palpitations, dramatic changes in blood pressure, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If all you are experiencing is diarrhea, that is probably not the issue. Also, it would be odd to experience refeeding syndrome after 48 hours if you are a healthy adult.
  2. Obviously, diarrhea is not normal. Most fruit has a mild laxative effect while soy yogurt is primarily beans, so I suspect those are to blame. I don’t think it’s carbs explicitly that are the problem–rice, applesauce, and toast are all commonly eaten when you need a firmer stool.

Answer

Iirc you should break it with a bit of food, no carbs since fasting is basically keto, just no calories. Once your body gets comfortable with eating that tiny bit, go eat more, and start eating carbs once you feel comfortable enough.
