I am on day 5 of a water fast, where I have drank water, tea, and coffee. Today I had my second spell of diarrhea, and it was unlike any I have ever had before. Some of it was a black tar kind of color, and the rest stained my skin and toilet kind of like a heavy curry stain.
Has anybody had this before, that might be able to share some insight? I am fasting mainly for weight loss but also trying for the medical benefits. I have been trying to drink mineral water occasionally, and also have some salt occasionally.
Thanks ahead of time.
If you are doing a pure water fast, this is actually normal. Your body starts self cleaning/self repairing. You spew black stuff around day 5, and it happens again every few days. Very black, very smelly, and mostly liquid, no solids.

Fair warning, after day 5, NEVER trust a fart…. consider yourself warned.

EDIT: I don’t know about a red curry color… but I do know that black/super dark is what I experienced. If you see blood, I have no feedback for that.
Part of it being black is that bile which is green doesn’t have any food to process but accumulates in your digestive system and must be expelled. This combines with old remnants of food, dead gut bacteria, and discarded husks of red blood cells… hence the blackness of the stool. It is quite common. Happens to me almost every five+ day fast.
Guys thank you for the info, I had a few spouts of bowel movements like that, then ended up stopping my fast on day 6. I had a regular bowel movement today and it was one of the most average ones I have had in a really long time. I have had ibs for years, and my first bowel movement today was really good, and did not have a “ got to go” urgency to it.
Have you done a water fast before? A water fast consist of ONLY drinking water. Stop drinking tea and coffee for a day or two. Im guessing it’s the coffee and tea. Would not recommend drinking coffee during a “water fast”
