Does it matter what kind of calories break your fast?

I see a lot of posts like “This is what I ate to break my fast!” or “I break my fast with a protein shake/veggies/fruit” and it’s got me wondering if it matters the kind of food or calories you consume to break your fast?

Obviously, if you break it with a Big Mac that will certainly ‘matter,’ but if someone breaks their fast with candy or other empty calories (in a small serving), does that impact how your body processes the rest of the incoming food during your eating window?

Answer

In my experience with insulin resistance, if I were to break my fast with something that spikes insulin, my cells would not be receptive to the nutrients in the rest of the meal. Other reasons for breaking my fast the way I do would be to improve digestion and micro biome (fiber/prebiotics). Prebiotics are a setup for probiotics. Sequencing definitely effects the body processes.
