First water fast questions, managing electrolytes and GI changes.

Hello.

I’m near the end of day 2 on my first water fast. I’m taking a 400mg magnesium supplement in the morning and have a mixture of lo-salt for potassium and salt for sodium to hit good electrolyte levels that I’m mixing with 2L of water and drinking throughout the day.

I haven’t been a very healthy person in the past and I’m doing this for weight loss and to hopefully change my unhealthy relationship with food. Coming out of this fast, I plan on adopting a simple and healthy meal prep plan from budget bytes and living a much healthier life. I don’t have a particular length goal for this fast, I’m hoping to go 7 days at least and if I’m feeling good, try 14.

I feel perfectly fine and got used to the hungry feeling quickly. However, I am having a lot of diarrhea. I read that this is common but I haven’t seen it reported often in the amounts that I’m having. I’m not really sure how to quantify it but it is often, a short-to-medium bout every few hours at least, with a pretty constant urge of a small amount. I’m not trusting any farts, don’t worry.

Is this really normal? I have no idea how much of the potassium/sodium is being absorbed - it feels like the water solution is going in one end and out the other. I’m drinking more plain water to make up for this but I’m not sure if I should be adding electrolytes or not.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated. Thank you.

Answer

Maybe go back to eating until the issue is resolved. After you are back to normal starting slow. Just do a OMAD for a while and don’t worry about taking electrolytes.

You may have GI issues from electrolytes not being balanced. If you go back to eating good food it should work itself out soon enough.
