I have typed and deleted this post so many times, but I am at a loss and need help. I am a research and reading geek so I feel like I am well versed in the various content and studies about fasting, including the ones that specialize in fasting for women.
I like fasting, it makes sense to me and although my weight loss is slow, the other benefits are great and I don’t find it that difficult. I have been fasting off and on for 4 years and I mix up different times and lengths. For 4 years I have had horrible periods, I will spare you the sordid details, but I basically can’t leave the house they are so bad. During the first 2 years I had my period every single f*cking day. I saw 3 gynos and they all said the same thing, they can’t see that anything is wrong but I should get a hysterectomy. I’m not doing that. I am 55 and so close to them being done for good, plus I don’t believe in removing body parts.
So for the last 2 years I intentionally would stop and start fasting to see if there was any impact on my cycle. Whenever I fast, regardless of how often and long, it would trigger my period and it would last weeks. If I stopped fasting, the period would stop and not come back. First time I went 5 months without fasting or my period and the second time I went 6 months. Both times I though hey maybe this is it and I started fasting and wham right back into horrible periods.
So, my brain says fasting is really screwing with my hormones, but I also know in order to fix my hormones I need to lose weight. I also I know that fat holds estrogen and during weight loss you are releasing estrogen and that can mess with your cycle.
As a side note, I have exhausted every option trying to deal with the crazy periods so please don’t suggest bc, IUD’s ablation, other medical intervention - been there done that. And the whole kicker is my iron levels bottomed out due to severe blood loss, which caused a whole bunch of other symptoms. I finally fixed that but then I haven’t been fasting, thus no period.
So, do you throw the towel in and are just one of those people that fasting isn’t for you or is there a magical solution that I am somehow overlooking?
Thanks for reading, and please be kind in your response.
Has anyone done an ultrasound for endometriosis, ovarian cysts? No mention of fibroids in exams (super common in peri-menopause)? Does fasting stress you in any way that you are consciously aware of? The reason I bring it up is I have had endo and cysts most of my reproductive years and stress makes periods and general pain worse, your body could be stressed by fasting.
Sorry that you’re going through this. Is your main objective to fast to lose weight? If so, maybe try something else - keto, cico etc. Curious if that eliminates whatever is triggering your health issues
