Mental and physical benefits of fasting?

Can anyone who has done 3+ day fasts comment on this?

1. How much better do you feel mentally and physically from fasting?

2. Also, do you look healthier from fasting? (or younger)

Also, what would you attribute these benefits to?

  1. The fasting process for me happens in waves. At times I’m feeling great, clear, focused; at other times I’m feeling hungry and angry and frustrated. Overall I think the benefit I experience (prolonged lowered blood sugar, and weight loss) are worth sticking it out through the waves.
  2. I don’t think I look more healthier or less healthier. I don’t feel like fasting changes my appearance, except that over time I’m losing weight and becoming more fit.

Can someone help me with a question?I watched one of dr Fung’s videos where he proved that calorie counting doesn’t work as the metabolic rate slows when we eat fewer calories ( I hope I got that right ). So if I fast for 16 hours would I not then be slowing my metabolic rate? I understand that drfung’s argument is that each time we eat we spike insulin and store fat ( again sorry if I’m wrong) . So is it a matter of not eating so you won’t spike insulin , and you will slow your metabolism but that is the lesser of two evils ?How do these two ideas fit together ?Thank you

Answer

  1. Physically yes, not bogged down from having eaten either poorly or too much as I have in the past. I do not attribute fasting to mental health. If anything it’s more of a roadblock for me, I find myself focused on feasting and fasting windows. Other things, healthy eating, self care in general are what boost my mental health.

  2. No. You feel healthier if you’re eating healthier food.

Fasting can be difficult and cumbersome. I’m only 2 weeks in. I’m planning on doing a month and determining if this is something sustainable.
