Coffee upsets my stomach too much. What else during a fast can I drink? Especially before workouts
Water is the best, I prefer it room temp for some reason. I also second zevia. I do diluted apple cider vinegar and electrolyte water (stevia or monkfruit sweetened.)
Black and green teas make me nauseous on a fast.
If lifting weights: .
I’ve been told that more than one lifter that dehydration reduces strength. So, some even drink water throughout the work out to maintain the body‘s ability to promote strength.
The sweetener Stevia is allowed when fasting for gut health, weightloss and autophagy. Some purists may consider using it “dirty” fasting but I don’t. That being said I have a Soda Stream and use Stur water enhancer to make flavored seltzer. Sweetleaf makes some dessert flavors like caramel, vanilla, coconut and chocolate that are great in herbal teas and coffee. I also sip pickle juice or olive juice and bone broth is allowed by some people since it’s basically just electrolytes. My husband and I do a 4 day fast every other month using these tricks and don’t suffer at all during them! I forgot to address the energy part! Zevia is a brand of soda that is sweetened with stevia. They have a couple of flavors with caffeine. Lots of water!!
Coffee probably upset your stomach because it’s acidic. (it’s the reason that coffee upsets my stomach during a fast).
. However, the lighter the roast, the more acidic it is. So consider drinking a dark roast.
Also, some people, including Buchlinger Wilhelmi, allow up to 50 or even 100 calories at a time, Knowing that this amount will be quickly worked off and they even claim they’ve done a study that eating this amount does not through the body out of ketosis. ( but if it is even a concern, simply to take a little walk and it will all be fine).
Therefore, we may consider adding a little (ideally whole whipping) cream or what not to your coffee to soften it.
Some sparkling waters have versions with added caffeine while remaining calorie/sugar free. For me it’s never enough energy but they’re a good option. The carbonation always helps me feel less hungry as an added bonus as well.
Water. And for starters you shouldn’t have more than one cup, I have a feeling it hurts because you might be proceeding that? It’s not healthy. But other than that your body’s natural resources, I cup of black coffee, water and that’s it. That’s kind of the point of fasting.
I’m partial to unsweetened caffeinated sparkling waters (like Hi Ball or True North brands). The ones you can find in the energy drink section generally have at least as much caffeine as coffee, with no calories.
Sleep drink water and don’t eat sugar. Sugar makes your energy levels high then plummet down even more to the point where you think you need to get energy from external sources. I was a day shift person and I switched to night shift. Not a single energy drink, coffee, or whatever was taken to switch. I just stopped eating sugar, carbs, sodas, juices. I only had my usual pastry I get on the weekends from whole foods. I try to get some sun and my energy levels are stabilized. I don’t get tired unless I’m about due to go to sleep for the day.
I drink this vitamin energy drink called Zipfizz daily. It has tons of good vitamins and guarana which is caffeine but from a different plant source than coffee. It’s amazing for getting rid of hunger and energy. It keeps me in deep ketosis and my weight has been consistently dropping. Give it a try with some hot water.
I also do Hot Cinnamon Spice Tea from a company called Harney & Sons - it tastes like candy and has no calories or additives. It’s awesome.
Disclaimer: biohacking informed not fasting informed. I haven’t considered fast breaking.
There’s more than just caffeine in coffee. Could try caffeine on its own. Could try adding theanine if it makes you on edge.
Exogenous ketones technically break a fast because calories but I don’t think switch glucose metabolism back on. Usually c8-MCT oil is the best.
I can’t remember if creatine promotes alertness through metabolism or on its own.
Finally, consider cold brewing your coffee if you’re getting indigestion. Cold brew gets less extraction from the coffee but produces a less acidic product too.
And finally electrolytes are important as others have said. I’ve seen a teaspoon of salt solution recommended for that, especially if it’s a complex salt like true Himalayan or sea salt. Dilute into a cup of water with a squeeze of lemon juice for sub 5 cal drink.
