I usually drink protein shakes every morning, before coffee. I also consider it breakfast, since im not a big fan of eating in the morning.
Im curious how quickly amino acids are converted to sugar? I mix about 15 grams of protein powder with 200 mL of water and a little matcha powder and drink it in less than 2 mins. Will my body immediately convert the protein to sugar? could my blood sugar spike?
I’m far from clued up.. but here is my understanding if anyone else can shed light?..I would guess it would not be immediatley converted to glucose.Even if you are low carb/keto, glucogenisis tends to occur to restore glycogen in muscles/to maintain normal glucose levels and you have hd a resting period/evening meal to do this.All meals raise blood sugar levels, less so keto, it may peak depending on diet (and the type of sweeteners used)not spike. 15g of protein powder is pretty low also.
This depends on a lot of things like genetic propensity, over all protein consumption and activity level.Overconsumption of protein can raise blood sugar enough to knock you out of ketosis due to gluconeogenesis.

Generally speaking, amino acids go first to the amino acid pools in cells, though those are pretty tiny.
After that, it could go either to glucose or be burned directly in cells for energy.
Generally speaking, it will only go to glucose if the body is in a low glucose state. If you haven’t eaten overnight, some of it probably will got to glucose as your glycogen stores will be lower because your overnight fasts will have depleted your glycogen stores.
You will not see a blood glucose spike - gluconeogenesis doesn’t produce glucose fast enough for that to be an issue.
