Hi all, I’m trying to understand the risks of fasting on gallstone formation.
I’ve read that rapid weight loss > 1kg week may cause these, and wondering how fasting fits into the picture.
For my own picture, mid 40s M, high cholesterol and I’m currently on rolling 48s / 72s and losing 1.5kg a week and wondering if I should slow down and go ADF.
In, so I can follow this.
If there’s a better way to follow a thread, do let me know.
Am losing 2.4 #’s/week, on two 24 hr fasts + a 16 hr fast.
Per Dr. Fung, I should be losing .6/day, however I find I now eat less on ‘feeding’ days , thus I lose 2.4#’s/week. Loving it but also needing to know abt gallstones.
thx !
If you look at medical literature from the bariatric population who undergo very rapid weight loss after surgery there is a slightly increased risk of gallstones formation compared to the general population. However there is no increased risk of symptomatic gallstone formation. Meaning enough gallstone disease that would require cholecystectomy.
The incidence of gallstones in the genera population is quoted as high as 20% in some studies but not nearly that high have symptomatic disease. Anyways I’m not sure if there’s any literature on gallstones and fasting but one could extrapolate the bariatric literature to fasting. Bariatric patients likely undergo much quicker rates of weight losses than those doing intermittent fasting.
I’m at work not but can provide citations later!
Try supplementing with this, it increases bile production lowering concentrations that could lead to gallstones:

Before I used it I felt pain in my gallbladder during fasts and now it completely cleared up.
