Should we be concerned with total sodium intake or the concentration of sodium we consume each meal?

3500 mg sodium with minimal water intake over a day vs. 3500 mg sodium with high water intake over a day.

High and minimal are arbitrary. Does anyone know of the RDA for sodium is also dependent upon water/potassium consumption?

Answer

Worry about your total sodium intake.

Also, I’m seeing quite a few threads asking about sodium.

Overconsumption of sodium shouldn’t be a major concern unless the bulk of your daily calories come by way of processed foods, most of which contain added salt for flavor. If you’re like the average American who this applies to, then yeah, cut down sodium by increasing your intake of whole foods. Otherwise, the fear isn’t that great.

Answer

I would also like an answer specifically like you’re asking. Being told “The average person doesn’t need to watch their sodium intake” Is not helpful whatsoever. Especially as someone who vigorously exercises & what not I’d like to be able to judge with some accuracy how much potassium/sodium I need to be intaking alongside fluids
