Successfully completed 40 day fast

Yesterday was my 40th day fasting! I broke my fast at 0900 this morning with a cup of chicken broth followed by 100 cal of chicken liver pate (homemade, just liver and salt), and 100 cal of chicken thigh meat. I had a little bit more broth a bit later and around 1300 had some coffee with cream.

I felt super tired immediately after eating and took a nap, but as the day went on I felt better and better. I’m looking forward to adding a bit more food to my life in the morning. As I’ve mentioned in older posts, I’m keeping my diet carnivore for at least the next three weeks to total eight weeks with no carbs – which should “fat adapt” me and make it easier to burn fat once carbs are introduced. I still plan on keeping the carbs low until I can see my abs again.

My starting weight was 208 and I finished at 169 for a loss of 39lbs. My 3 site skin fold started at 17/18/18 for a body fat of 21% – I finished with a 8/18/8 for a body fat of 12% (although under 14% the caliper becomes unreliable and I suspect there is a lot of visceral fat under my belly). I didn’t get a pre-fast measurement of my waist, but currently it’s 35.5 and I think that’s a 3” loss. At that measurement, though, the Army would say I’m at 19% body fat. I guess the best thing to do is go get a DEXA scan.

I could have probably gone ten more days – and I had entertained the notion – but I had also planned on breaking my fast at 40 due to spiritual significance. The last five days were almost as hard as the first five, simply because I knew the end was approaching. The middle thirty, though, were simple.

Now it’s on to refeeding and rebuilding this temple! Good luck to all of you fasting and I look forward to reading about your successes!

How was the mental aspect for you? I did 40 days once, and I felt that I was able connect thoughts together where I might not of before. It was truly profound. I ended up moving across the country after mine 😂.

Answer

Did you do anything specific to get your body and mind ready for such an extended fast? The longest I’ve ever successfully fasted for was a 7 days. The first 2 days were rough and the rest was fairly easy. I thought I could keep going but decided to end it there since I had to travel across country. I’d love to hear what you put in your body during your fast. (Salts, vitamins, etc)

And most of all congrats!!

Answer

Holy shit! This is well done!

I started out fasting at 208 or so too, and I’m just a bit younger than you. My goal weight is probably a bit higher - 180lbs or so - than yours. What’s your height, by the way?

Forty days is probably too much for me, but I’m doing a lot of 24 hour fasts, and regular 48 hour fasts too when I’m not depressed etc. Hoping in the next couple weeks to get under 200lbs!

Dang, great job. What did you consume during the 40 days to help? I’m curious of the advice. I drink black coffee, carbonated waters, and zero calorie water flavors. I’m new to this and have only done 1-2 days. TIA

Hey there OP!

Congrats! That’s definitely a huge success. I’ve been thinking about starting a 40 day fast for a while. Just wanted to ask some questions from someone with experience.

So… I’m currently 244 lbs. My exercise routine is basically about 90-105 minutes of cardio every other day. I’ve lost about 39 ish pounds in the span of 1.5 months.

Will I be able to keep up that exercise routine while fasting? Most of the time I take a pre workout drink about 20-35 minutes before entering the gym, and that gives me energy for the whole workout.

So I guess my question is mainly about the energy levels and weight loss. With work + classes, I’m just really worried that I won’t have enough energy and mental clarity to do everything.

Also how much weight do you guys think I’ll be able to lose? Most days, I can lose about 2-2.5 lbs every 2-3 days

Thank you, in advance, for any answer.

Edit: My target weight is about 178-180 lbs

Wow! Great job!

I’m planning on doing a 40 day water fast starting tomorrow I was wondering did you take any supplements such as multivitamin/magnesium/potassium or took pink Himalayan salt or sea salt for the light headedness or dizziness?
