The early plateau frustration

Just need a place to have a minor vent.

Today is the end of week three of 20:4 fasting. I’m neither a newcomer to fasting or weight loss, got the t shirt for both. In the past I’ve been one for collecting data, so strict calorie counting and daily weigh ins but my all or nothing personality means that when I fall off that wagon, I fall off it hard!

This time I decided I’ll stick to the fasting because it works for me, stick to low sugar and whole foods and weekly weigh ins. So when I stepped on the scale this morning to find my weight had not budged in the slightest from last week, my heart sank a little.

I know I need to trust in the system and that it’ll work but still, it’s hard to not get a little frustrated.

Edit: just to add, I’m not really looking for solutions, it was more just a case of being a bit annoyed when your weight hasn’t moved even a fraction of a pound over a week! I’m going to keep plodding on as I’m pretty confident that this is the best solution for me in the long term, I just needed somewhere to vent! ☺️

Answer

I had pretty good luck sprinkling in a few longer fasts of 43-48 hours. Not doing them often, just when I feel like I need a little kick. That tends to get you into stronger ketosis so that you can still easily maintain some level even when you go back towards 20:4.

The ketosis levels I see on a breath acetone meter now in my 3rd month are significantly higher than my first few weeks were. Perhaps you’re still burning through your body stores and not getting good ketosis yet.

Daft question, are you doing any cardio or workouts?

I have been doing IF 20:4 or 18:6 and hit the plateau for months. Then I realised that I hadn’t been doing the same amount of exercise I was doing Pre COVID.

Answer

I’d suggest you add calorie counting. For me once I began to weigh my foods and meal plan I lost weight almost effortlessly. I also do 45 min of workouts 5 days a week. Running, walking, biking or lifting. You’ve got to be close to maintenance for calories or it’s possible you are losing very slowly.
