Too Many Carbs in Veggies?

Can someone eat TOO much carbs through vegetables? It seems like in order to maintain a certain weight, carbs have to be considered (along with exercise) which raises the question; if someone is trying to maintain a weight, and be nutritionally conscientious, could they be eating too many vegetables? Would someone be able to supplement lack of vegetables with vitamins? Thinking of foods like beets, spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, artichokes, kale, carrots, tomatoes, things that have a higher sugar content.

Answer

You can achieve weight maintenance and weight loss on high carb diets as long as your caloric intake is still in deficit

I’m on a 450g a day carb diet to sustain my workouts and I’m still losing weight slowly

Focus more on your caloric intake overall

Answer

Woe woe woe.

No.

Yes vegetables contain carbohydrates but one of the better ways to lose weight is to lose some starchy carbs off your plate which are more calorie dense and load up on veggies because they’re very filling, with lots of fibre and nutrients and makes it less likely you will fill up on other more calorie dense options.

Carbohydrates only need to be considered because they contain 4 calories per gram of carb and calories matter overall for weight management. Carbs themselves on no more fattening that protein or fat when calories are equated.

It’s also worth noting that people who eat more protein tend to have better weight loss and maintenence outcomes as it’s quite filling and has a higher cost to digest than carbs and fats but that cost isn’t enormous but yet still a little helpful. Every little and all that.

If you can eat a lot of veggies, I would not advise dropping them for fear of carbs, it’s counter intuitive. Supplementing with vitamins instead of eating them also misses out on all the fibre which also creates a feeling of fullness and is extremely good for health.

It’s highly unlikely a plate of veg is what’s making someone overweight or gain.

Just keep your calories roughly in line with your expected maintenance to maintain a certain weight.

Answer

  1. carbs are not causing fat gain
  2. veggie carbs aren’t different than a carb from any other source, all that changes is the micronutrients of the foods
  3. yes, you can eat too many veggies and get fat. Although it’s not as easy with fruit, calories are calories

Answer

It’s highly unlikely. For one, you have to define how much “too many” is. You could argue that there isn’t such a thing as “too many carbs” if they’re coming from vegetables. If by “too many,” you mean something like “too many to be healthy,” I would say it’s almost impossible. Vegetables have so little carbohydrate and are so filling it would likely be impossible to eat an unhealthy excess of carbohydrate from vegetable sources. Also, you listed peppers and tomatoes, which are fruits, not vegetables.

Answer

They are complex carbs, not carbs as you are imagining in french fries and gatorade. Complex carbs are not unhealthy and are mandatory to support bodily function. Do not worry about overeating vegetables, the pros outweigh the cons to the tenthfold.

Answer

If I eat ANY CARBS, My insulin levels & glucose goes up & for me this is DISASTER. Maybe someday I will be able to eat non starchy vegetables or salads again but not until I am metabolically healthy enough.
