When does hunger return?

People note that hunger disappears after 1-2 days of fasting. I read that hunger returns after a while, but I’m wondering how long that is. Is there a particular amount of body fat/muscle/mass that’s a marker for hunger returning?

Answer

i’m well fat adapted for around 2 months now so extended fasts are pretty easy, my longest being 7 days which I stopped because i wanted to eat not really due to hunger. i would imagine the more lean you are, the easier it is for you to get hungry as your body has less fat stores to provide you with energy (hepatic gluconeogenesis). other than that, hunger for modern humans is mainly an emotional/addictive type of response. true hunger probably kicks in when your body is on the verge of literally starving to death. as for your question, i assume you’re talking about psychological hunger (mediated by ghrelin amongst other hormones), it’s really different for everybody. afaik, there’s no specific marker to predict hunger as a lot of it is psychological.
