Xylitol, Erythritol, or Stevia in mints?

Which one of those sugar substitutes is the healthiest in mints? What are the differences?

Thanks in advance <3

Answer

It depends on how you define “healthy.” Xylitol and Erythritol are sugar alcohols, so they get metabolized differently. Apparently erythritol is entirely excreted, but I’d have to find the source on that. Stevia is an extraction from a natural source. On the spectrum of artificial sweeteners, I think these are among the more responsible ones.

Xylitol will kill your dog even in small doses, so be wary of that one.

Answer

Keep in mind that sugar alcohols like Xylitol and Erythritol can mess with your gut biome and are also hard to be digested by your body. For example, Erythritol gives me the worst stomach ache and awful gas (sorry, maybe tmi.) Stevia is from a plant and is more digestible and has even been shown to be beneficial to your body. You have to get raw, natural stevia though. Not the processed stuff or it’s just as bad as other artificial sweeteners

Stevia is from a plant but it is so heavily processed that I don’t think that fact necessarily makes it better. Xylitol is great for your oral health and cavities. I consider all 3 to be there best artificial sweeteners available with similar risk/benefit profiles. I’d try all 3 in mints and decided based on taste.
