160% Iron in a 17.5oz can of C2O coconut water. How??

I was drinking a can of coconut water last night and noticed that the nutrition label says that it contains 160% of your DV iron. I looked at a few other flavors and they range from 90%-160%. How is this possible? Is this accurate? Label misprint?

I never thought coconut water could be considered a good source of iron.

Answer

Nutritional labels are regulated by the FDA. If consumers suspect a label is inaccurate, however, FDA welcomes information from them as well. Consumer complaint coordinators located in 19 FDA district offices throughout the United States and Puerto Rico will listen, document your complaint or concern, and determine the appropriate contact for follow-up. You can find the number of the complaint coordinator in your area at fda.gov.

Answer

Coconut naturally contains NON heme iron. It’s not heme iron which is found in meat/organs.

Non heme iron is less readily absorbed and come from mostly plants and it’s safe to consume more than the fda dietary limit.

Answer

Be very careful of drinking too many of these on a regular basis. The recommended daily allowance for iron varies depending on age and gender. At 28mg of iron per can, drinking two of these can put you into dangerous territory.

The human body, regardless of age and gender, can only metabolize 40 to 45 mgs of iron per day maximum. Anything more than that, depending on excess amount and frequency, the iron can cause vital organ shutdown. Iron can be extremely dangerous, and even lethal, if you intake too much!
