Also, is it okay to consume spinach everyday or will it trigger kidney stone formation?
Microwaving does not reduce oxalates, though if you drain off liquid some may go with the liquid.
Different people have different sensitivity to oxalates; some will form kidney stones and some will not. Unfortunately, the first way people find out they are sensitive is by getting an attack, which is extremely painful and debilitating.
So there’s no way to answer your second question. I have had kidney stones and have zero desire to repeat the experience, so I avoid high-oxalate foods.
I drink at least 24oz of green smoothie a day, for over 3 years now. My smoothies have spinach and kale in them. I drink close to 70oz of water a day also, half of that with lemon in it. I have never had any problem. My kidneys are fully functional, don’t know about yours though.
Not sure if my spinach was frozen or raw when I did this, but I once microwaved spinach and it caught fire inside the microwave - apparently it can happen because it’s mineral-dense? No idea about the oxalates, but just wanted to give a word of warning.
So I looked into oxalates a while back. What I found was that cooking is the only thing that reduces oxalates, as they sift out from the spinach into the water, which is then discarded.Since heating things in a microwave works differently, the oxalates cannot escape into the water. Thus microwaving itself should not reduce oxalates significantly.
What happens if you put spinach into water and microwave it together, that I don’t know. Would be interesting to find out though.
I put a pretty massive amount of spinach & kale in my smoothies not to mention pretty much anything else I can, Sandwiches, Eggs, ETC & have never had any issues. I’ve had people tell me to be wary & what not when I tell them but IDK, I also stay very hydrated & am health conscious in other ways. I think it’s not something to be very concerned about.
