do zero drinks with 2kcal per 250ml (~8 oz) break my fast?

I have a question. I’m on 16:8 and it’s going fine, but the only thing I’m battling with, is having no taste in my mouth. So I drink 1-2 glasses of zero drinks (ice tea zero, fanta zero mostly) daily and they have like 2 kcal per 250ml so I basically drink 4 kcal in my fasting window. Is that bad? Or are 4 kcal fine because it’s not that much? It also helps immensly with getting rid of my cravings for something sweet like chocolate. :) Thanks for the help!

Answer

My guess is that you’re doing this for weightloss and not expressly for autophagy (which can be induced in more ways than just fasting, btw). If this is the case, then you’re fine. If autophagy is the main goal, you’re better off sticking with water only.

Any drink that uses aspartame or sucralose (Splenda) is going to cause a glycemic response. In fact, Splenda has been shown to have more response than straight up eating sugar. Splenda is essentially poison. And it’s horrific that “diet” drinks are even marketed to diabetics. If you consume drinks that are sweetened by non-glycemic index sweeteners such as stevia or erythritol, you will not see a drop in ketosis.
