Does a small splash of coffee creamer break a fast?

I can’t drink black coffee on an empty stomach or I will puke my guts out. Worst case scenario I guess I will just give up coffee.

Answer

I am new to IF and had this same question, and found different results online. I guess it depends on what your goals are and your reasons for fasting. Some sources said adding anything to black coffee breaks the fast. Others said as long as you keep it under 50 calories, such as a splash of milk, it doesn’t break the fast. Personally, I’m easing into IF by having my coffee the way I like it: with milk, a little bit of collagen powder, and a sprinkle of cinnamon (still under 50 cals) - even if it takes my body out of fasting, as some sources claim, it’s still cutting my calories, forcing me to fight hunger in the morning, and getting me into the routine of IF. If I don’t see the results I’m looking for, I may also just eliminate coffee - like you, it hurts my stomach too much without the add-ins.

Answer

I dont know for sure but cream fat and sugar carbs are probably a guarantee to break a fast.

Cold brew really eliminates the acidic bite in a cup of black coffee, and It can be heated up if u need to have it hot. Not sure if that might help. Another option for a similar drink would be tea.

Artificial sweetener or fat free creamer? I have no idea, but I can’t stand the taste of the fake stuff anyway.

Answer

Heavy cream is what you want

https://drbeckyfitness.com/coffee-and-intermittent-fasting/ in this publication we can see heavy cream did not negatively affect the blood glucose of a guy with insulin resistance.

Answer

Since some people are suggesting tea, I wanna point something out. Black tea has the highest caffeine content so you might see that suggested, but you shouldnt drink it on an empty stomach since the tannins in it are known to make people nauseous (Ive had that and its been brutal)

Answer

It may technically break your fast, but it’s not the end of the world to not be perfect about this stuff. I have been doing 16:8 since June and I still have a little bit of milk in my tea in the morning and I still feel like I am getting IF benefits and have lost significant amount of weight. Personally, I know what I can and can’t sustain. And even though I know my few tablespoons of milk makes it “dirty” fasting, it also makes the whole venture more sustainable.
