So if I do a blind test on two cups of coffee, one with sugar and one with honey - which one has less calories?
Tablespoon for tablespoon honey (64 calories) contains more calories than table sugar (45 calories). But this largely an issue of density. Honey is a liquid and sugar is a granulated solid.
Gram for gram, sugar actually has about 25% more calories than honey. In addition to fructose and sucrose, honey also contains a fairly significant amount of water and other things to account for the difference in calories.
I can give you an alternate example that I use - maple syrup vs icing sugar on my pancake. Even if I brush my pancake carefully I end up using 3-4 grams of maple syrup. I am able to achieve similar level of sweetness with 1 gram of icing sugar. Maple syrup has 2.6 calories per gram while sugar has 4. While I love maple syrup, I go for sugar. Hope this helps.
